Many people don't understand Whole Life insurance...although it is by far the simplest of the permanent types of life insurance to understand. The other reality is people think ALL Whole Life is the same...when in reality there are 4 types of Whole Life...and it depends on the type of company that issues it...

Your point is well made...many of the wealthiest Americans have placed significant amounts of money in Whole Life to supplement their retirements.

Whole Ranges from Best to Worst as:

Mutual Owned In-Direct Recognition
Mutual Owned Direct Recognition
Stock Owned In-Direct Recognition
Stock Owned Direct Recognition

If someone doesn't know the difference or can't explain it...they will make the mistake of thinking that it's all the same...

If you are buying your Whole Life from any of the big Mutuals - Mass Mutual Financial Group, New York Life Insurance, Northwestern or Guardian than you are in pretty good shape...

Think of it this way in simplest terms (although not exact)...when a company is profitable they pay a dividend to the shareholders...a mutual company's shareholders are the policyholders... Do you want to own a participating policy with a company that has to pay out shareholders before they pay out to the policyholders? Only if you are a stockholder...

Using whole life insurance as a way to save money may not be your best bet .... Whole life becomes a very worthwhile vehicle when a dividend paying policy is used. ... when he is in retirement, try obtaining these type of benefits
